Bats! Songs, Finger Plays, and Jokes

We’ve been reading about and making our own bats. Here are our songs, finger plays, and jokes about bats for preschoolers and kindergartners. As always, I credit and link where I know the author. If you are the author and I haven’t credited you, please let me know!

I’m a Bat
by Mary Flynn (sung to: You are my Sunshine)

I love the nighttime,
The dark, black nighttime,
And that is when I fly around.
I am nocturnal.
I love the nighttime.
‘Cause I’m a bat,
I fly without a sound!

5 Little Bats
(From No Time for Flashcards click for a video of the song!)

5 little bats went on a flight
by the light of the moon one night
Mama bat said squeak squeak squeak swack!
but only 4 little bats came back.

Repeat for 4,3,2,1

No little bats went on a flight
by the light of the moon one night
Mama bat said squeak squeak squeak swack!
and 5 little bats came flying back!

Bats are sleeping Bats are sleeping
(sung to: Frere Jacques)

Bats are sleeping, Bats are sleeping
Upside down, upside down
Waiting for the night
Waiting for the night
Then fly around, Then fly around

Way up High in the Bat Tree
Sung to “Way up high in the apple tree”

Way up high in the bat tree (point up)
Two little bats smiled at me (smile like a bat)
I shook that tree as hard as I could (pretend to shake tree)
Down swooped the bats (make swooping action with hands)
and I ran away as fast as I could (slap thighs quickly)

Five Little Bats
Five little bats hanging upside down. The first little one didn’t make a sound.
The second one said, “I’ll fly far tonight.”
The third one said, “I don’t like sunlight.”
The fourth one said, “I want to eat some bugs.”
The fifth one said, “Let me give you a hug.”
Five little bats hanging upside down. Shhh! It’s daytime, don’t make a sound!

Bat Jokes

Why don’t bats live alone?
They prefer to hang out with their friends!

Why should the bat brush his teeth?
Because he has BAT breath!

Why do the other animals avoid bat?
He has a BAT temper!

Why did the Bat’s car stop?
It needed a new BATtery!

What did the sailor bat say when the ship hit rough weather?
BATten down the hatches!

Why did the Bat need eggs?
For his pancake BATter!

What did the baseball umpire say when it was the Bat’s turn to hit?
BAT-ter up!
