Here are some of the songs we are singing and finger plays we are reciting about rain and the water cycle. The lyrics to the first are original (please link and credit if you wish to use them). The rest I have credited where possible–if I have missed any attribution, please let me know!

The Water Cycle Song (to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”)
by Candace Lindemann

The sun in the sky (make a big round sun with your arms)
Heats up the ground
Heats up the ground
Heats up the ground
The sun in the sky
Heats up the ground and starts the water cycle.

The water on the ground
Evaporates up (raise your hands up)
Evaporates up
Evaporates up
The water on the ground
Evaporates up and turns into a gas.

The vapor in the clouds
Condenses (squeeze your hands closed)
Condenses
Condenses
The vapor in the clouds
Condenses and becomes a liquid again

The droplets in the clouds
Precipitate down (make a raining motion with your fingers)
Precipitate down
Precipitate down
The droplets in the clouds
Precipitate down and we call it rain

The water cycle
Goes round and round (circle your hands around each other like the “wheels on the bus”)
Goes round and round
Goes round and round
The water cycle
Goes round and round and it all begins again.

5 Little Raindrops

Five little raindrops plopping on the floor,
one plopped away, and then there were four.

Four little raindrops dripping on the trees,
one dripped away, and then there were three.

Three little raindrops splashing on my shoe,
one splashed away, and then there were two.

Two little raindrops starting to run,
one ran off, and then there was one.

One little raindrop drying in the sun,
it dried all up, and then there were none!

The Rain (Sung to: “Sing a Song of Sixpence”)

Pitter patter raindrops
falling from the sky.
Here is my umbrella
to keep me safe and dry.
When the rain is over
the sun begins to glow.
Little flowers start to bud

  1. In “The Rain” song, after the last line “Little Flowers Bud” – there is an additional line that goes “and Grow, Grow, Grow!” 🙂 It completes the rhyme and the song. Hopefully it was just a typo and we caught it. Thanks!
