Avast, ye landlubbers! September 19 be Talk Like a Pirate Day and me mateys and me are hoisting the main sail with pirate hats and eye patches!

Why did the pirate wear a hat?

To keep his buccan-EARS warm!

Living on the coast, we are awash with pirate lore and “pirates” frequently make an appearance at local festivals.

For the hats, we just made the traditional childhood newspaper hats and decorated with markers, jewels (arrr…treasure!), and some pirate clipart.

Directions for the Hat & Eye Patch

1. Fold a length of newspaper in half.

2. Put the fold at the top and the open flaps at the bottom. Fold the top corners in to meet at the center.

3. Fold up the bottom flap on one side and then the other. Tape or staple in place.

4. Decorate.

5. The eye patch is even more simple.  Just cut out the shape in black paper, punch a hole in the top inner corner and the bottom outer corner, and thread through black yarn.

Arrr…go scare up some trouble, ye sea wolves!

Educational Connections:

  • History: Find out about a real pirate from history. Why did people become pirates? How did pirates live (where did they sleep, what did they eat, how difficult were the voyages)? Why would someone choose to become a pirate?
  • Science: How did pirates use navigational instruments and the stars to find their way out at sea?
  • Literature: Read a story about a famous fictional pirate.
  • Current Events: (for older students) Are there still pirates today? How are they the same as the pirates of the past? How are they different?
