Witch or Wizard Hat Craft for Kids

With Halloween coming up, our crafts have focused on the spooky.  Here’s a fun, simple craft you can wear: a sorcerer or witch’s hat.

  • construction paper or oak tag, any color, at least 11″ x 14″
  • paper plate
  • scissors
  • tape
  • materials for decorating (paint, crayons, markers, glitter glue, Halloween stickers, etc.)

1. Cut out the center of the paper plate and decorate.

2. Twist the top two corners of your paper down and in to create a cone. Adjust to size for your child’s head and staple and tape. Then tape the plate to the inside of the paper cone.

3. Add any decorations you want to the hat.  My son made his hat blue because of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (as interpreted in Disney’s Fantasia) but he decided he wanted to use Halloween stickers instead of stars and moons to decorate. Personally, I would draw a silver spider web on mine!

Educational Connections:

There is a lot you could do with older kids to discuss the history of accusations and depictions of witchcraft.  However, the topic is a bit dark and disturbing for young children.

So, instead, this could make a good writing (or drawing) prompt: “If you had a magic hat, what would you wish for?”

With elementary aged kids you could also discuss the importance of responsibility.  Would it really be a good idea to have a magic hat clean up your room or do your homework or get you a lot of candy? What might be some of the consequences and what valuable experiences would you miss.

Hats also make great prompts for creative theater games!
