Shaving Cream Pumpkin Art
My children have been asking me when we could do shaving cream art again. The tactile experience helps build learning and the kids have a ton of fun playing with paint and shaving cream. So, we made shaving cream pumpkins!
Materials:
- posterboard
- foaming shaving cream
- paints (Halloween colors)
1. We traced and cut-out a pumpkin shape from poster board.
2. Then I poured foaming shaving cream and some paints (mostly orange with a little green and purple) into a flat-bottom container. The kids stirred it all around with fingers and with chopsticks.
3. Gently press the pumpkin cut-out into the shaving cream and lift.
That’s it! Repeat several times if desired!
Since we had the paints already out, we tried using our mini-gourds for some “pumpkin prints”. We stamped with the bottom of the pumpkins and then cut one in half, lengthwise, to try different prints.
The paint was a little thick to make very clear prints but lots of messy fun was had by all!
Educational Connections
- Pre-literacy: With your finger, trace upper and lower case “P’s” in the shaving cream.
- Art: What color are pumpkins? What other things are that color?
- Art: Talk about printmaking and how it allows an artist to create multiple copies–although there is variation in each print.
