Top o’ the morning to ye! Here’s a wee fellow you can make out of a cardboard (toilet paper) tube, some construction paper, yarn, and googly eyes…and a bit of the blarney!

Materials:

  • cardboard tube
  • construction paper (green, light pink or peach, and black; optional: yellow and a second color of green)
  • red marker
  • googly eyes
  • scissors
  • glue
  • orange yarn

Directions:

1. Cut the pink or peach paper and wrap around the cardboard tube, approximately 3/4 of the way up the tube.

2. Cut a length of green paper to cover the rest of the tube.

3. Trace a circle on the green paper and then use the tube to trace a smaller circle inside. Cut the larger circle and then cut out the center.

4. Take the larger circle and place over the tube as the brim of the hat. Take the smaller circle and glue to the top.

5. Cut a length of black paper to form a hat band and cut a buckle (a small square, fold, cut out the center) from yellow, gold, green, or other appropriate color paper. You can also (optional) add a small shamrock in a different green). We had some green glitter paper so, of course, it found its way onto our leprechaun!

6. Make a cut where you want the top of the beard. Cut a small section off the bottom of the tub parallel to the cut so that the tube will still stand up after you wrap the yarn beard around.

7. Thread orange yarn around the bottom and through the cut and tie a knot. Keep wrapping until you have a full orange beard.

8. Paste on googly eyes, draw a mouth, and crumple up a piece of the light pink paper to make a nose.

This is one leprechaun who won’t get away!

Educational Connections:

  • History and Culture: What are some of the legends about leprechauns? What other cultures have legends about small, magical creatures? What do these types of creatures help explain?
  • Language Arts: Leprechauns are said to have the gift of the blarney. Practice your own by writing or telling a story full of make believe and charm.
  • Language Arts: Write a sentence or story explaining what you would wish for if you caught a leprechaun!

I appreciate you spending some time and effort to put this content together.
I once again find myself spending a significant amount of time both
reading and leaving comments. But so what, it was
    still worthwhile!
