One of the enduring symbols of the Modern Olympics is the five interlocking rings.
I showed my children the flag and my daughter guessed that the rings represented countries. I asked her if she could name more than five countries. Once she did, I told her she was close but since there are more than five countries, it had to be something else. What could it be? She responded “maybe continents?” We named the continents and counted seven. I asked her about Antarctica and she pointed out that it is uninhabited. I told her she is right and joked that Antarctica is probably not sending an Olympic team of penguins! I then explained that the Americas could count as one and that gives us five regions of the world.
We then used a plastic cup to stamp the five rings.
Materials:
- white paper
- a plastic cup
- paint (blue, yellow, black, green, red)
- small tub of water
- paint brush (optional)
- napkin or rag
Directions:
1. Paint the rim of the plastic cup with the blue paint and stamp it down on the white paper. Rinse and dry.
2. Repeat for each of the colors, interlocking the yellow ring slightly below and to the right of the blue ring, the black above and to the right of the yellow, the green below and to the right of the yellow, and the red above and to the right of the green.
